ORIGINAL SHEET MUSIC FOR PIANO STUDENTS

Clemens Hoffman

A word from the composer:

"I was born into a family with a long musical tradition on my father's side. They were mainly classical and church musicians, but my older siblings' musical tastes soon sparked my interest in jazz and pop music. Being an emotional guy, I was especially moved by the melodic pop and rock music of bands like The Beatles and Led Zeppelin, and artists like Billy Joel, Eric Clapton and Elton John, among others.

Writing music, and songs in particular, has been the biggest driving force in my life from an early age. Being 'torn' between classical and pop music is a recurring theme in my writing, but I have actually come to the conclusion that all of that is nonsense. There are only two kinds of music: good and bad!

As a pianist and piano teacher, I am passionate about writing for the piano. Taking my inspiration from the great classical composers like Bach, Mozart and Beethoven, but also Ravel and Stravinsky (my father's favourite, so part of my childhood) and Jazz greats like Bill Evans, Duke Ellington and Miles Davis, I have strived to develop a distinct style of my own. My first piano book, 25 Sketches for Piano, was published in 2005 and dedicated to my mother. Subsequent works include pieces for four hands, sight-reading pieces and longer works for piano. 18 Pieces for Piano is my most recent work.

My father's untimely death had a big impact on my view of the world and life in general. When translating that into music, I often find myself writing about the struggles we all have to face and probably recognise, i.e. about love, or the lack of it, and everything that is wrong in the world. But also about the absurdity and immense beauty of life, etc. etc.

I have had my share of rock 'n roll with my band Mirage, with whom I have been fortunate enough to make music in many beautiful places on this planet, and which has brought me true friendship. The unrelenting love of music and the (many) things we have experienced together are among the highlights of my life.
I should also mention the collaboration with my great friend Frank Giebels in LA, which led to the recording and production of wonderful songs and an invaluable set of friendships.

This is just to give you an impression of my life. I hope, in any case, that I can convey these 'vibes' to the listener through my music..."
